Stacking Up Sim Stats of All-Time Best Center Fielders

bleacher_219Over at the Bleacher Report, Sr. Writer Zander Freund has put together an insightful top 10 list of the all-time great center fielders.  From Zander's perspective, only two on the list are still playing -- Ken Griffey, Jr. and Andruw Jones -- although "playing" for both these players may be an overstatement given injuries that have dramatically hampered their production.   The story is broken into four parts here (Introduction, Part I, Part II, Part III)

Zander did a nice job describing each of the 10 players, justification for the ranking and unique attributes of each, like Tris Speaker, who came in at No. 2, often playing as shallow as 40 feet from the infield.  To the surprise of some, Negro League star Oscar Charleston ranks 3rd on Freund's list, ahead of Ty Cobb, Mickey Mantle and Joe Dimaggio.

I thought it would be interesting to see how these players stacked up against one another in Diamond Mind Online sim stats, and their related salaries.  I'll first examine the players' key offensive stats in this post (below). For the purposes of this post, I'll be looking at the only the retired, historic players.  Later this week, look for my comparison of these players' defensive stats.

All-Time Top Center fielders Sim Avg OBP SLG HRF DMO Salary
1. Willie Mays .302 .384 .557 16.5 $23.2M
2. Tris Speaker .308 .380 .471 47.1 $20.1M
3. Oscar Charleston .298 .365 .514 21.6 $18.4M
4. Ty Cobb .352 .410 .529 40.8 $21.9M
5. Mickey Mantle .304 .415 .579 14.2 $25.9M
6. Joe Dimaggio .297 .353 .533 19.1 $18.6M
8. Max Carey .253 .329 .372 52.0 $8.3M
9. Kirby Puckett .295 .330 .436 40.3 $11.0M

Let me know what you think the stats are saying compared to Freund's list.
