Negro League Stars Shine On in Diamond Mind Online

The 11th annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference just concluded outside of Chicago last weekend.   oscarcharlestonfull_255According to this piece on MLB.com, a few dozen scholars, fans, researchers and former ballplayers attended.

The article got me to thinking about how the great players of the Negro Leagues are largely unknown to baseball fans, let alone the general public.  Through Diamond Mind Online, we take pride in the fact that we have these Negro League players well represented through our sim stats, and in some way, have preserved that baseball history.  One particular great Negro league player highlighted in the article was Oscar Charleston.  Bill James, in his New Historical Baseball Abstract, ranks Charleston as the fourth-greatest baseball player of all time behind Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner and Willie Mays.  Not bad company, Oscar.

So when drafting and signing your DMO teams, don’t overlook the Negro League players.  There are some great players in there and they can be perfect addition to your roster.

In my next post, I’ll do a comparison of Ruth, Mays and Charleston to see how their sim stats stack up – and more importantly, how their respective salaries make them more or less attractive in your lineup.
